Missiles flow into Syria, risk falling into hands of al Qaeda – Washington Times. Rowan Scarborough reports on the rising threat of MANPADs (shoulder fired anti aircraft rockets) as they spill into Syria.
The report states that the majority of these rocket systems are Russian SA-7 models and are newer than the roughly 20,000 that “disappeared” with the collapse of the Libyan Government. This means two things.
1. There are potentially 20,000 weapon systems that are already on their way to terrorist group. I’m personally betting that about 1/3 of those minimum are still in Libya and are just buried and forgotten.
2. As the article points out there is a separate black market from which these new ones came.
It would stand to reason that Iran is involved in this trade. Iran benefits from having its neighbors unstable, it allows Iran to manipulate markets and prevent its neighbors from rising above them. Of course only time and those nested withing the Intelligence Community will probably ever know.
