Perhaps it is in fact the cussedness of the left that points them in the opposite direction of truth. To parents it should come as no small surprise that children tend to embrace liberal ideas. The resistance to guidance, to discipline, and the stubborn streak of teens to oppose their parents in their drift toward adulthood fully embraces the concept that feelings not facts matter.
The old adage that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, only really applies if of course you believe in hell to begin with. For liberals who seek to remove discipline and guidance, especially in the name of their old gods of nature and sex, it is intention not the result that matters.

When it comes to sex we are told to embrace the benighted concept that sexual education leads to fewer children born out of wedlock. We don’t just embrace this failed concept but we chastise those who would act to shelter children from sex and sexual freedom. Don’t get me wrong, I think it is important to teach children of the risks of pregnancy and disease. The problem is when do we teach them, when do we teach them about condoms and other options such prophylactic options and the costs associated with them.
Of course I’m getting off topic. The focus of Dr. Sowell’s essay is more deeply centered not on how the left fights all areas of common sense, rather that it denies the very existence of evil. To the left, Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot are all just bumps and anomalies that somehow came to power. The left cannot admit that evil exists. To admit that there is real evil means that we would have to give up historic fossilized evil and the non evils that are their foci of today.
