Linux Birthday

Posted on 2017-08-26 by Patrick
Yesterday I found myself writing a short research paper for my MBA.  Without even thinking about it, I chose a topic which has been close to my heart now for 16 years, Linux.  My first introduction to Linux was in the fall of 1999, when I learned about Red Hat.  At the time, I was running an Compaq 486 with windows 3.x which I later upgraded to Windows 95.  My first foray into Linux wouldn’t actually happen until 2001.

When I built my first Computer even though one could physically install Windows on multiple computers at the time, the End User License Agreement (EULA) didn’t technically allow it.  I looked at the available options, and chose to purchase a box installation of Red Hat.  The OS worked, but I chose the wrong dial up modem for the computer so I was destined to doing everything self contained.  Still, I kept Red Hat on that computer for a while before migrating to Windows XP so I could play my games of choice.

In 2003, I picked up my first copy of Lindows an OS which later became Linspire and Freespire. Linspire was my OS of choice, and I ran it until it was no longer supported in 2008.  Actually, I continued to run it for a while after support ended before I migrated over to Ubuntu in 2010.

For those who think you need to be ultra computer savvy to use Linux, this is a myth.  My undergraduate is in multi-disciplinary studies, I have never taken a programming class.  I can assure you Linux is as easy to use as any commercial operating system such as Windows or Mac.

While I am currently writing on a Macbook Pro running El Capitan,  I still have a desktop running Ubuntu as well as a Macbook Pro that runs OpenSuse.  Linux has become so mainstream that even major computer manufacturers like Dell sell systems preconfigured with Linux installs.

Linux you have come a long way since August 25th, 1991 when Linus Torvalds made his first post to the web.

Hello everybody out there using minix –

I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.  This has been brewing
since april, and is starting to get ready.  I’d like any feedback on
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons)
among other things).
I’ve currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that I’ll get something practical within a few months, and
I’d like to know what features most people would want.  Any suggestions
are welcome, but I won’t promise I’ll implement them 🙂
                Linus (torv…@kruuna.helsinki.fi)
PS.  Yes – it’s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have :-(.

It supports practically everything, it runs on  practically everything.  It runs on so many platforms, Linux has even had a satire piece written about installing it on dead badgers.  Cell phones, Kindles, Kobos, TiVo, airplane media systems, DoD hardware, cars, watches you run it all.  Thank you and Happy Birthday Linux.  You are a central part of all our lives.  not bad for a small hobby.

About Patrick

First and foremost, Patrick is a fallen being far from perfect in just about every way. Saved by Christ more than a decade ago, his life has been transformed. While there is more to Patrick than simply his redemption this must be placed up front because it is perhaps the most important brick in the foundation of this blog. Additional information about Patrick includes his home. He is a displaced native Minnesotan who has studied just about everything. He holds both a Bachelor of Science in Multi-Disciplinary Studies and an MBA with an additional emphasis on Public Relations, both from Liberty University.
