Prager University 1.5

In my last post I noted that Prager Univeristy will be down for the next couple of months.  During this interim period you can still introduce people to a few of the classes that will appear there.

First of all for the newbie, Prager University is totally free.  It originally launched as a series of YouTube videos/ YouTube channel.  If you haven’t seen any of the courses or want to introduce somebody to the school that prides itself in teaching wisdom then take a look here.

Prager University

Prager University has been temporarily taken down while it undergoes a redesign.  I would imagine the new design will have a much more successful launch than the ill fated not to be named Government Health Exchange website.

For any educator who is interested Prager University has an iPad give away as part of their awareness program.  Sign Up today.

Surge in ADHD diagnoses gets a red flag – FRANCE 24

Surge in ADHD diagnoses gets a red flag – FRANCE 24: “Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), nearly one in 11 American children aged 13-18 and one in 25 adults are affected by ADHD.”

Is the overdiagnosis of ADHD any surprise at all?  A few years back, Cracked.com ran a comedic piece on 6 diseases that have become Trendy.  If I had any say in it ADHD would have made the list.

This isn’t of course to say that ADHD doesn’t exist.  There is no doubt that there are people who due suffer from the disease, but suffering from it and using it as an excuse for bad behavior is simply unnacceptable.  This is where apparently not only the United States but every other western nation is falling behind.

Routinely people use the excuse of I can’t do that because I have “blank” disease”.  Or I cannot help myself because I’m a sex addict.  First of all with the sex addict example there is this thing called restraint.  After all Recovering Alcoholics know they cannot control themselves when it comes to alcohol, they remove themselves from the situation.

Or what about this man who blamed his beating of an infant on ADHD?  Sorry but personal responsibility is just that a responsibility.  If you cannot control yourself you remove yourself it is that easy.

There are situations where medications work but even then medication is not the end solution, it should be used as a tool to assist in the realm of self control not to be the means of control.  When we put a name on a problem diagnosis it as a disease even if it is a real disease we remove power from the individual and give them the opportunity to fall victim to their disease instead of allowing them to bend the disease to their will and overcome all Obstacles.

To parents.  Take responsibility for your kid.  If you truly cannot instill responsibility go seek that help and see if your kid needs outside assistance and if that still isn’t working ask about medication by all means.  Don’t however allow your children to become the victim of their own situation.

When Smart People say really dumb things

Dr. Savage is an intelligent man, but in a recent rant against flu shots he has clearly crossed a line with reason.  Beware of the feds’ flu shots, says Michael Savage – Hot Topics:

First of all the study that has been linked to vaccinations and autism has been shown to be flawed.  http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellness/12-myths-facts-vaccines/story?id=20213475#2

Second not only was the study flawed but the guy who conducted it was found out to be a fraud and did time in jail for his fraudulent claim.   http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/01/05/autism.vaccines/

The flu shot is a very important vaccine to combat the most likely influenza viruses out there.  Getting the shot is the responsible thing to do.  The amount of mercury is so small you would be at bigger risk eating a can of tuna every 3 months than getting an annual flu shot.

To Dr. Savage’s claim that you would blame yourself for your kid coming down with autism or MS or something worse down the line if you get the flu shot.

Let me ask just one honest question.  How would you feel if your kid or spouse died from the flu because you were too much of an idiot to do what you could to prevent it.

Chess Grandmaster Takes On 10 Jail Inmates Blindfolded, And Wins « CBS Chicago

Chess Grandmaster Takes On 10 Jail Inmates Blindfolded, And Wins « CBS Chicago:  I’ve been playing chess for a long time.  I don’t know exactly when I started playing but it was before elementary school  At the age of 33 this is close to 30 years.

I played in high school tournaments, I played one rated tournament where I fared ok but I had entered too low of a bracket and was bored with the game play and could have done far better.  I would play at a local chess club and played against a former United Sates Grand Master, as well as a 3 time MN State Chess Champion.

In college I was elected the Vice President of the University of North Dakota’s Chess Club before I left the state to return to MN.  There I would play against a young man who eventually took the ND State Title the year after I left.  I won approximately 1/3 of the games he and I played together.

After returning to MN I volunteered as a chess instructor for Valentine Hills Elementary School.  Under the tutelage of myself and my uncle our school took first place in a district wide tournament with some of the poorest students at day one moving on to win most of the games to take that title.

I have played a total of 4 games blind folded.  I’ve lost all four, this was about 40 moves into each game.  I got lost and misplaced where my opponents put their pieces.  I have also played 8 tables (where I am playing between 4 and 6 games against the a different opponent on each board).  In my table play I have lost a total of 3 games.  Both blindfold and table offer their own set of hindrances.  In a blind folded game just as  Grandmaster Gareev pointed out, it is nearly impossible to keep track of all the pieces.  It is hard enough with one game let alone 10 games.  With table games you are playing a different opponent on every board, the strategies will differ and the number of combinations create the situation where you have to recalculate you next move with every rotation of the board.

I do not envy the Grandmaster I could not have played that well.  Playing a table I may have been able to defeat all 10 opponents though now that I am woefully out of practice.

The concept here however I think is well worth while.  One of my favorite things about teaching chess to elementary school students was that I was teaching the children how to see cause and effect and how to plan long thought out strategies.

I think this is a charity that would be well worth getting involved in.

My Saucy Macbook

It took me a couple weeks to get it working, but I am now running Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander om my MacBook Pro 13″ (7,1 model).

The first attempt to just upgrade from 13.04 failed with the computer locking up, I then tried to install over the failed install again with disastrous results.  Wifi didn’t work, screen would turn black, computer would lock up.  I regressed back to Ubuntu 12.04 which had minor hiccups that were easily fixed.  I ran 12.04 for only 4 days before I tried one more time with 13.10.
The second attempt worked.  This time I had the laptop hooked up via Ethernet cable so I could update without issues.  The first round of updates enabled my wifi without issue.  After the wifi was updated I searched for drivers and installed the nvidia proprietary one that was recommended too easy.
It has been 4 days now without a single issue.  I am slowly installing programs to test everything but again no issue.  I didn’t even lose a single file.  Part of this is due to my partition scheme.  Instead of simply installing, I split my linux partition into two partitions a
root partition /
and a home partition /home
simply installing would have created the home partition as a sub partition of the root partition.  This would have resulted in writing over my personal files and caused much more pain and anguish in restoration of lost documents.
